What people time with a stopwatch

  • Running and swimming: lap splits on a track or in the pool. Turn splits into pace with the running pace calculator.
  • Speeches and presentations: rehearse and check you fit the time slot.
  • Science experiments: reaction times, pendulum swings and dropping objects.
  • Games and puzzles: speed-cubing, quizzes and timed challenges.
  • Work tasks: measure how long routine jobs take to plan your day better.

Lap time vs total time

The lap time is how long that single lap took, measured from the previous lap. The total (or split) is the time since you first pressed Start. Coaches watch lap times to see whether an athlete is speeding up or slowing down. The fastest lap is shown in green and the slowest in red once you have three or more laps.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this online stopwatch?

It measures time with your browser's high-resolution clock and displays hundredths of a second. The time is calculated from when you pressed Start, so it does not drift even if you switch tabs. Human reaction time when pressing the button (about 0.2 seconds) is usually the biggest source of error.

Can I record lap times?

Yes. Press Lap while the stopwatch is running. Each row shows the lap time and the total time, and the fastest and slowest laps are highlighted.

Are there keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. Press the Space bar to start or stop, L to record a lap and R to reset. Shortcuts work when you are not typing in a text box.

Will it keep running in the background?

Yes. The elapsed time is based on the clock, so when you come back to the tab it shows the correct time.

Can I copy my lap times?

Yes. Press Copy laps to copy every lap as text you can paste into a spreadsheet, notes app or message.
